NEWBORN LIFESTYLE SESSION WITH FIRST TIME PARENTS

My goal is to have all my sessions be as relaxed as possible! I send out a session guide with some helpful tips to help the session move along as smoothly as possible. I try to keep sessions under 2 hours but ultimately I’m on your schedule and the babies so I’m never in any rush. I think it sets the tone for a more relaxing environment. I shoot lifestyle, so I really like to lean into natural moments that families have together but I will give some loosely guided poses.

Some tips for first time parents

1) Photograph the baby within the first two-three weeks. I like the 10 to 14 day mark as it gives parents a little time to adjust but the babies are still sleepy and (typically) free from baby acne. A sleepy baby helps with a smooth session.

2) Warm up the room. Easy in the summer but crank up the heat a little in the winter. It allows us to take pictures and show some skin without the baby being uncomfortable.

3) White noise. Even if you don’t use it, don't be surprised if I pull out mine. It really helps calm the baby. Remember the noise has to initially be louder than the babies cry to help with soothing. I had some VERY fussy/colicky babies so I’ve acquired a few tips.

4) Parents know best. Even first time parents, you know your baby best. When it comes to soothing them there is no wrong way, it’s whatever is working, so please share your knowledge.

5) Schedule. There is no schedule with a newborn. I use to ask parents to nurse before I came and then felt like that was just adding stress and I LOVE nursing images. (If you don’t, that’s okay, we can skip!) Don't worry about any prep. I show up ready to jump into your morning.

6) Cleaning. Don't. I will help you, so just be okay with me rearranging things a bit. I keep things looking the same but I will moving your phone charger or the glass of water from the night before etc.

7) Clothing. Yes, you are at home and I want it to look natural but you are still spending good money on the session, so dress up! Mom, wear a flowy dress or a jumper. Dads can wear casual pants and a plain t-shirt. It really elevates the images when you dress up a little and you will not regret it. I will send you a mood board, shop around for you (if needed) and make it SO easy.

I have a lot more tips that I will be sharing soon.
